The Prayer Life of Jesus Christ, Part 2

PrayingJesusCopyright 2013 by Bob Rogers
Yesterday I began this study of Jesus’ prayer life. We looked at the times and places that He prayed, and today we will look at the actual words He prayed. After the previous study revealed how pervasive prayer was during His earthly life, it is striking to notice that there are relatively few prayers of Jesus for which we have the words recorded. In fact, I have only noticed ten. Of those ten, the first two are actually model prayers that He gave for us to pray, and most of the others are extremely short. The great exception is His “high priestly prayer” in John 17, which should indicate to us how important it is to study that prayer in particular.
Here is a list of the recorded prayers of Jesus:

The Words that He prayed:

1. The Model Prayer (usually called “The Lord’s Prayer”). Matthew 6:4-13; Luke 11:2-4.
2. The Model Confession. Jesus tells a parable and says the prayer of the tax collector is a worthy example of confession. Luke 18:13.
3. Praising God for His revelation. Matthew 11:25-26; Luke 10:21.
4. Thanking God in advance for answering prayer. John 11:41-42.
5. For God to glorify His name. John 12:27-28.
6. His High Priestly Prayer. John 17:1-26. Here Jesus prayed for Himself to be glorified (v. 1-5), for His disciples to be sanctified (v. 6-19), and for all believers to be unified (v. 20-26).
7. For God’s will. Matthew 26:36-44; Mark 14:36; Luke 22:40-46.
8. On the cross: forgiveness. Luke 23:34
9. On the cross: forsakenness. Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34.
10. On the cross: finality. Luke 23:46.

  1. Reblogged this on Layman's views from God and commented:
I found this blog today and went back to his blog of yesterday and will be following him in the future as he has many good points to consider. With my minimal knowledge of Jesus life and God’s will for our lives I find myself neeing this kind of help. I hope you too will enjoy this copywrighted blog and begin following him as well. God blesses us every day in many ways and we need to know how to thank him. I use prayers of thanks, short and simple, but I list as many rthings as I can think of he has blessed me with that day or the night brfore. Little things like the sleep I got, the rain we received, the warm temperature, and so on. We tend to overlook these little blessings we received each day. Thank him and youo will find his blessings increasing in you life. He wants us to thank him. He loves to hear us say thank you. Try it for a month and see if you don’t have more thingas to thank him for by then that you will keep thanking him because you know he hears you. May God bless and keep you safe secure and full of love, for Jesus Christ lived and died for us and blessed us then and is now. In Jesus name I pray this prayer: Thank you Father God for all the grace you bestow upon our lives every day. I thank you for your blessings and your love as shown in the giving of your only son for our salvstion. Thank you Jesus, Thank you for my Salvation. I Jesus holy name I pray. AMEN

  2. Thanks. I’m glad that you found my blog helpful.
