About Dr. Bob Rogers

Since 2015, Bob Rogers has been an adjunct history professor (online) for Baptist University of Florida. He is the author of Mississippi Baptists: A History of Southern Baptists in the Magnolia State, published in 2025 by the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board in conjunction with the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission. You can get a copy by making a donation (I suggest at least $15) to the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission here.

In 2024, Rogers retired after 43 years of ministry: 33 years as a pastor in Mississippi and Georgia, and 10 years as a hospital chaplain in Mississippi. He continues to teach history online, and teaches an adult Bible class at Temple Baptist Church, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. For many years, he taught the Bible at a local prison (if you noticed a pattern here– yes, he loves to teach, but he also loves to read and learn.) The opinions on this blog are his own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the institution for which he works.

Rogers has a B.A. in English from Mississippi College, M.Div. in Biblical Studies, and Th.D. in church history from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He likes to review Christian books and history books, write about theology, history, and practical Christian living, particularly the subject of prayer– and he loves to hear and tell funny stories. For ten years, Bob wrote a column that was published in a few newspapers, called “Holy Humor,” with light-hearted true stories about church life. You can find some of those stories on this blog. He enjoys sports (Southern Miss, New Orleans Saints, Houston Astros), and since retirement, he can often be found cruising his road bike down the Longleaf Trace, if he’s not reading a book or spoiling grandchildren.

Bob said “I do” to Mary in 1980. They serve in Re/Engage marriage enrichment ministry through Temple Baptist Church, as they share the story of how God redeemed their marriage. They have three grown children, all of whom are married, and seven grandchildren.

Look for posts on this blog several times a month.

  1. Thank you for sharing, and God bless you. I am a recent seminary graduate (Asbury Theological Seminary, Orlando, FL campus), and I am currently a pastoral intern at Faith Assembly of God in Orlando.

  2. Dad, now you should add you have a grandson! =)

    • I will correct that oversight today!

    • I am currently pastoring a church in Iuka Ms. established in 1844. Would you happen to know where I can find some background on the origin of this church? Mt Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. It was affiliated with the Big Bear Creek Association and now the American
      Baptist Association Texarkana Ar. Thanks.

      • Duane, the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission Archives at the library at Mississippi College in Clinton has church records and microfilm records on Mt. Gilead Church, which was also at one time under the name New Salem, in Tishomingo County. Contact the archivist, Heather Moore via email at HSMoore@mc.edu or call her office at 601-925-3434 and she can tell you more.

  3. Your site is referenced by Pastor Waters at FBC Statesboro. I don’t know if it is a problem with my computer or with yours but the security tapes of Jennifer Aniston do not go along with the message of Christian Muslims nor your About Bob Rogers page. Please check it out and let me know if it is my computer or yours. Thank you Judy

  4. Judy, I looked on the site but I don’t see any security tapes of Jennifer Aniston, so I’m not sure what you are referencing.

  5. Dr. Rogers,

  6. Brother Clyde, you are very welcome!

  7. Hi Bob, My 1984 Thompson chain reference NIV bought in that year is out for it’s second rebind.
    I was 27 when I bought it……The year I was saved.
    Now I am 57.
I live in the UK and have just ordered a1985 NIV study bible from the USA to complement the Thompson.
Memorising scripture is vital and the 1984 is in my head.
Looking forward to getting them both soon.
I use a kindle and having no digital download is frustrating.
Although carrying a Bible is a great witness!
    God Bless. Kelvin

  8. Hello Kelvin. I know what you mean. I memorized the Sermon on the Mount in the 1984 NIV, and when I tried to learn it in another translation, I got confused, so I just returned to the 1984 NIV. By the way, you can get the 1984 NIV downloaded on your Kindle if you get the Kindle edition of the NIV Teen Study Bible, the one copyrighted in 2010. It is still for sale on Amazon, and was done before the 2011 NIV was published, so it uses the 1984 NIV translation. I downloaded it myself in order to have the 1984 NIV on my Kindle. Here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/Teen-Study-Bible-International-Version-ebook/dp/B003OUXB5Y/ref=sr_1_6_twi_1_kin?ie=UTF8&qid=1427842836&sr=8-6&keywords=NIV+Teen+Study+Bible

    • Thanks Bob, i managed to download the 1984 niv from davids megabible site tonight.
Amazon.co.uk do not have the teen bible. God Bless. Kelvin

  12. Hello, Rev. Rogers. God helped me to discover you and your blog this morning as I was preparing a Bible study for men at a local homeless shelter. I was searching for passages about people who had failure pinned to their life stories. I found the 2014 article about the people who certainly fit the bill. I look forward to reading more things that you have posted. Thanks and have a blessed day!

    • Hello Betsy,
I’m glad you found one of my blog articles useful to you. May the Lord bless your ministry to the homeless shelter, and thanks for following the blog!

I thank God to have such a friend like you God bless you dear Pastor

  14. Bro. Bob, in reading your views on our names written in the book of life, you base it on the foreknowledge of God, but then you bring in predestination & thereby making it, what I understood as your conclusion, that God selects who he wants to be saved. Let me explain a different view that maybe worth its time. If God is NOT willing that any should perish then how could it be that he’d be doing the seleting & not a matter of one choosing? How is it then that in Matt.22:1-14, Jesus is making known what the kingdom of heaven is liken unto but then the translators insert “are chosen” rather than what should be in its place? By taking a close look at that parable, we can see a major error contradicting the entire meaning of this parable by its conclusion. There’s much to this & I can only lead you to look up Nehemiah Gordon’s findings on Matthew’s writtings found written in Hebrew. And so it is that while I was reading its english translation, there were NO words found, “are chosen” but rather “chose”. Therefore this & other scriptures similiar give an entire opposite meaning to my understanding why the names of those ever born were there before the foundation of the world. It is us who decide to believe His Word very much as the first couple that God placed in the garden. We’re priveleged to return our graditude to Him in “believing” Him who loves us most. Thank you for staying till the end.
